Your body has an innate capacity to release stress, tension and trauma. Beneath the surface of daily life, a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating lives in every one of us. It allows deep muscular patterns of holding to soften and let go. When this mechanism activates in a safe and supported way, the nervous system settles. As a result, the body returns toward balance.
Many Paths to One Shared Intelligence
Many people around the world first met this innate mechanism through TRE® (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises). This simple series of exercises helps bring the response online. However, TRE® is not the only doorway. People have also found the same process through Somatic Experiencing, shaking medicine, and many other traditional and contemporary body-based practices. Different roads lead to one shared intelligence.
Safety First: Reconnecting Gently
How we reconnect with this mechanism matters. The most supportive way back is through safety, in a trauma-informed and contained way. The aim is not a cathartic explosion or an emotional breakthrough. Instead, we meet the body gently and gradually. We move between sensation and settling, and between activation and rest. We call this movement pendulation.
Each swing helps the nervous system build capacity. Because of this, what arises integrates rather than overwhelms. Over time, we learn to reconnect with sensations in the body, stay with them, and trust the body’s own pace.
Homeostasis and Resilience
As the body moves closer to homeostasis, its natural state of equilibrium, resilience begins to grow. A nervous system that can settle can also meet life’s ups and downs with more flexibility. Each time we move through activation and return to balance, the body learns that it can recover. Consequently, our window for handling stress widens. We get thrown off course less easily, and we find our way back faster. We don’t force resilience. It emerges naturally each time the body returns to equilibrium.
A Capacity You Carry With You
Once the body remembers how to release, you carry that capacity with you. You can return to it independently whenever you need it. In this way, it becomes a lifelong support for health and wellbeing.
As we release our defensive habits, we make room for peace, calm, curiosity and joy. Many of us haven’t felt these states since we were young children.
This process is for individuals and groups, children and seniors alike. Still, it works best with skilled, trauma-informed support and at a pace the body welcomes.
